Gravity is not the only thing worth defying

September 8, 2013 by antdina

Barnett Newman painted mural sized canvases. The images purposefully avoid subject matter. Newman’s work invites introspection because of the play between massive fields of color that fill up peripheral vision and thin lines that cut across. His expressions show how the physical and the spiritual remain tethered. And then one day he makes a sculpture. The Broken Obelisk steals most people’s breath because it violates many rules.  At first glance we see a tower with a pointy top, an obelisk, […]

Let’s rename it to “Rosememory”

September 1, 2013 by antdina

Despite scorching temperatures outside, the end of Summer is upon us. Not much time to enjoy the Fourth Turning of baseball’s regular season. It is the end of free play. The end of spontaneous trips for snow cones in the middle of the day. Back to school with heavy book bags and freshly polished linoleum. No. New obligations crowd our minds. Why is it that we do not typically delight in endings?  Because it marks the completion of what we enjoy. We […]

Pizza made the way Magritte paints

August 25, 2013 by antdina

Renee Magritte steals our breath with paintings that twist reality.  Museum curators have put this artist in the surrealist category: paintings that blur the lines between what is real and what is absurd. At times, it is a careful play between two things which are true to the eye, but not quite at the same time. Like a fish head at one end and a woman’s legs at the other. Renee’s photo-like depiction of scenes separate him from his surrealistic […]

Who knew that crunch was an emotional trigger?

August 18, 2013 by antdina

Anne Marie Chaker at The Wall Street Journal gave us some new insights how monster consumer brands are amping up texture in products.  It seems that preferences for mouth feel can put consumers into one of four categories: chewers; crunchers; smooshers; or suckers.  The findings suggest that we reach for snacks that not only match our style but the situation around us. Christine Kalvenes, Frito Lay VP of Innovation, explains in the WSJ online video, that time of day or […]

Grammatically so wrong tastes so right

August 11, 2013 by antdina

Romance languages, like Spanish or Italian, like agreements.  Adjectives end in the same letter as nouns they modify.  Nouns are either masculine, feminine or neutral.  The word “pizza” in Italian, is feminine and ends with an “a.” Were it masculine, it would be called “pizzo.”  But we know better. White pizza stands without tomato sauce.  It’s enjoyed for the crust alone or adorned with ingredients like potatoes or cheese. We call this pizza bianca. So why is it that people […]

Steal like an artist, not like a pirate

August 4, 2013 by antdina

Long before Austin Kleon rose to the New York Times best seller list, a narcissistic Spaniard with a fascination with bulls and the female nude had something important to say. Good artists copy, great artists steal (Pablo Picasso) Austin Kleon champions creativity in the digital age.  He lays out 10 really important concepts that inspire us to do something worthwhile. Chef Mario Batali already knows what it’s like to be an artist. Visit any one of his NYC restaurants and […]

If you want to succeed, get the frame right

July 28, 2013 by antdina

Travel the Natural History Museum in New York and it will focus the mind on the evolution of things.  Begin on the fourth floor where dinosaurs live. Curators designed the permanent exhibit as walk through millennial time.  It shows the progress of species by the only evidence we have: the bones left behind. Scientists point our attention to the hole in the pelvis.  This evolution provides a socket for the thigh bone and greater mobility on land. Or consider the shift […]

Italy in my pocket

March 12, 2012 by antdina

A long table of Italian vintners settle into conversation at San Francisco’s own A16 Restaurant.  They come to witness where their bottles are uncorked nightly.  The come to meet the owners face to face.  They come taste Southern Italy on their palates. Nearby, colleagues look over butcher paper covered table tops.  Some are native to SF and others traveled here.  Tonight we soak in Italy.  We are pulled by a gravitational force from a busy kitchen where carbohydrates flow like lava.  The wine list […]

The Kitchen Table

February 13, 2012 by antdina

Many plans are made at the kitchen table. The altar of ideas between close friends and family members. This humble household furniture must be regarded as the sacred family institution. It is the hitching post for family values, the gang plank for homework and the negotiation place for car keys. We should all honor this unassuming friend. Not even worth a proper name, this device serves bachelors, lovers, big families and empty-nesters. Who wouldn’t you claim this first when inheritance are […]

Old container, new view

February 6, 2012 by antdina

Surprise is the foundation of delight. Change the music and change the mood. What about transforming the vessel? Does altering the eating plane inspire a new meaning? A couple of Halloweens ago, I found myself pressured to make a choice. Either finish a quick bowl of spaghetti or join the group’s trick-or-treat stroll. Feeling suddenly resourceful, I nested dinner inside of a very transportable, 16 oz red plastic cup. We rounded corner after corner and bites slowly disappeared. This would […]
