Introducing the edible portrait

November 10, 2013 by antdina

“After a while I murmured to Picasso that I liked his portrait of Gertrude Stein. Yes, he said, everybody says that she does not look like it but that does not make any difference, she will, he said.”  ― Gertrude Stein, The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas Picasso’s paintings strike with an unforgiving savageness. He paints raw truth in sharp relief. And sometimes his words carry that same poison tip. The quote about Ms. Stein opens the door for artists to decouple […]

Starting an adventure is a matter of taste

October 13, 2013 by antdina

A boy sits alone. His fingers press the soft, musty pages so that the spine nearly creases. In one breath, he exhales the weight of day: the noises from the other room; the taunting from school; the meagerness of his lunch. He plunges into the story, head, heart and all. His feet land on an island swarming with pirates. The salty breeze gives way to damp boots of sailors who hunger for gold at any price. This is a world […]

An everyday thanksgiving

September 22, 2013 by antdina

Jeff and Trudy came into our lives as teachers for our two boys. They brought the love of lacrosse and the love math to our children. They also brought values of fellowship and discipline. They breathed life into the example of “bringing up children.” You know, the metaphorical image of physically lifting dead weight. What it costs them is dear. To open their hearts wide and without self concern. So when the children graduate, there are tears. A strange mix […]

A cocktail designed to inhale

March 31, 2013 by antdina

The description catches your eye. Rye is not an easy flavor to like.  All kinds of  images of amber moonshine spring to mind.  Still a play on the classic Manhattan cocktail is as evocative as Marilyn Monroe’s sultry rendition of Happy Birthday. You order and turn your attention  back to the conversation at hand.  That is, until the server returns with a tray. She lays it down with two fist size lowballs adorned with double black diamonds.  You don’t even catch the […]

Italy in my pocket

March 12, 2012 by antdina

A long table of Italian vintners settle into conversation at San Francisco’s own A16 Restaurant.  They come to witness where their bottles are uncorked nightly.  The come to meet the owners face to face.  They come taste Southern Italy on their palates. Nearby, colleagues look over butcher paper covered table tops.  Some are native to SF and others traveled here.  Tonight we soak in Italy.  We are pulled by a gravitational force from a busy kitchen where carbohydrates flow like lava.  The wine list […]

The Kitchen Table

February 13, 2012 by antdina

Many plans are made at the kitchen table. The altar of ideas between close friends and family members. This humble household furniture must be regarded as the sacred family institution. It is the hitching post for family values, the gang plank for homework and the negotiation place for car keys. We should all honor this unassuming friend. Not even worth a proper name, this device serves bachelors, lovers, big families and empty-nesters. Who wouldn’t you claim this first when inheritance are […]

Old container, new view

February 6, 2012 by antdina

Surprise is the foundation of delight. Change the music and change the mood. What about transforming the vessel? Does altering the eating plane inspire a new meaning? A couple of Halloweens ago, I found myself pressured to make a choice. Either finish a quick bowl of spaghetti or join the group’s trick-or-treat stroll. Feeling suddenly resourceful, I nested dinner inside of a very transportable, 16 oz red plastic cup. We rounded corner after corner and bites slowly disappeared. This would […]

Fairytale dinner

January 9, 2012 by antdina

It does not take falling into a rabbit hole, downing a bottle of “drink me” or squeezing through a tiny door to go into another world. If you want adventure and to see the smile of the Cheshire simply cross the portal of the Herbfarm. No time have I a found a living expression of my working theory that food can be a tool to communicate so close as this. Like high art of poetry, dance or painting, complex ideas […]

Just like wine

December 26, 2011 by antdina

From time to time, it’s important recognize the value of things around us.  Please enjoy a simple toast I put together for friend who was kind enough to open his cellar and wallet wide enough to treat 12 close friends to a gourmet meal on a special night.  We sipped grand cru wines from France and savored wizardry from chef owner Robert Del Grande at his namesake restaurant.  If you don’t know RDG, then you are missing out. Dr. Paul […]

First thanks

August 14, 2011 by antdina

Mt. Desert Island has been a sanctuary for my family for more than a decade. We fell into this vacation land quite by accident. Or rather, we never chose it as much as followed others there. It remains the pristine home to Acadia National Park, many lobster fishermen and a summer crowd which swells while temperatures heat up back home. The air, the mountains, the sea cleanse the troubled mind of the over connected world. Our recipe is simple. Sleep […]
